History of BurleyLike most of Leeds, Burley was built on industry and you can still see some of the old mills on the banks of the River Aire. History of KirkstallDuring the English Civil War, the bridge over the Aire at Kirkstall was blown up by Royalist troops from Leeds. After discovering this, a Parliamentary force led by Ferdinando Fairfax, 2nd Lord Fairfax of Cameron, from Otley, had to cross the river upstream at Apperley Bridge before retaking Leeds in January 1643.Kirkstall was historically an important centre of industry. Kirkstall Forge lays claim to being the longest continually used industrial site in Britain founded in the 13th century by the Cistercian monks of the abbey, and a number of printers. The First World War brought about large scale growth, providing axles for military vehicles and by 1930 most lorries and buses made in the UK had a Kirkstall back axle casing.Kirkstall is around 2 miles from the city centre and is close to the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University. Its main visitor attraction is Kirkstall Abbey. In the 12th century Cistercian monks founded Kirkstall Abbey, a daughter house of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire. Kirkstall Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery set in grounds which are now a public park on the north bank of the River Aire. It was founded in approximately 1152 and took over 75 years to construct. It was closed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under the auspices of Henry VIII. The ruins have been painted by artists such as J. M. W. Turner and Thomas Girtin.The Abbey House Museum opposite the abbey tells the story of the community and the town. History of Headingley 

Headingley's history starts in Viking times with the Shire Oak or 'Siaraches' at the centre of the town. Legend says this ancient oak tree stood to the north of St Michael's Church until 1941 and gives its name to two pubs, the Original Oak and the Skyrack. Viking tribes would flock to this tree that was used as a meeting place for settling disputes or calling together their armies before an invasion.Headingley was mainly a farming village until the expansion of industry led those with more money to look for property near Leeds, the rich liked the look of Headingley with its open fields and clean air and so here they built until eventually Headingley became another suburb of Leeds.In 1840, it became the site of Leeds' Zoological and Botanical Gardens. Despite the opening of Headingley railway station, serving the gardens in 1849, the zoo was a loss-making venture and closed in 1858. The bear pit still survives though and can be seen on Cardigan Road.Throughout Headingley's modern era, the rugby and cricket stadia have been significant in the fabric of the area. A major England test match or a rugby league derby brings many spectators to the area. The cricket ground has been enlarged in recent years to maintain its eligibility for test matches, while in 2006 the eastern terraces of the rugby ground were replaced with the current Carnegie stand.

Headingley has all of the nightlife that you would normally find in a city centre without having to venture that far!There are juice bars, noodle bars, nail bars, and lots of great pubs close by that make Headingley a great destination for a night out with many places catering to the vast student population that rent in Leeds.Headingley also has two renowned fish and chip shops whom have been serving the popular dishes since the 1930s.One of the many long established pubs, The Headingley Taps is so called because it was formerly a water pumping station and is just one of the many pubs to visit when undertaking “The Headingley Mile” – a well renowned local pub crawl. History of Hyde Park The name Hyde Park seems to have been extended to the area from the name of the road junction “Hyde Park Corner” itself apparently named in the nineteenth century on the inspiration of Hyde Park, London.Unlike the nearby areas of Burley, Headingley and Woodhouse, Hyde Park was not historically a village so its boundaries are inevitably vague. Local people would largely consider Victoria Road, Cardigan Road, Alexandra Road and the University edge of the park along with Woodhouse Moor, to be the boundaries of Hyde Park.Much of the area was originally known as Wrangthorn, and this is still used in the Church of England parish name "Benefice of Woodhouse and Wrangthorn", and the Church at Hyde Park Corner is Wrangthorn Church.Swallows and Amazons author Arthur Ransome was born in the area and you’ll find a blue plaque on No 6 Ash Grove commemorates this. The singer Ricky Wilson, of the band Kaiser Chiefs, also lived in Hyde Park whilst a student at Leeds Metropolitan University and still lives nearby.Amenities in Hyde Park Primarily catering for the student population there a number of cafes and shops at Hyde Park Corner, including a vintage and antiques store and a Greek cafe. History of Meanwood Woodhouse is a largely residential area just north of the city centre of Leeds and home to the University of Leeds.The original Woodhouse area of Leeds extended in a wide horseshoe arc travelling north from Burley Road.During World War II the Institution Street area (now Holborn Approach) was accidentally bombed by the German Luftwaffe during night-time blackout air-raid attempts to destroy a nearby industrial target. History of Roundhay Roundhay was formerly a hunting park for the De Lacy family of Pontefract Castle. Coal and iron were once smelted here, however the area turned to farming after the coal was exhausted.Roundhay was just a small hamlet up until the early 1900’s when the park was bought by James Nicholson who started a period of landscaping, and built the Roundhay Mansion. A program of housing construction then steadily began.Roundhay Park was bought by Leeds City Council in 1872 and opened as a public park by Prince Arthur. At this time the park was largely inaccessible to the majority of Leeds inhabitants due to the distance and poor access from the main suburbs.
